Real Housewives - Hair Extension Addicts

It is amazing to see that nearly every Real Housewife of every city wear hair extensions - they are hair extension addicts!

Hair Extensions are the "new normal" and the Real Housewives were not born with all that gorgeous hair.  Twenty years ago, many never heard of hair extensions and today they are not just worn by celebrities, but all of us.

Lisa Real Housewives of Miami

Hair Extensions can be applied with keratin protein bonding called fusion hair extensions or with tiny links called Micro Links.  Twenty strands of hair is separated and a hair extension is applied to the strand.  Tons of hair extensions are placed through out the head to create a glam style.

Alexis Bellino  both styles have hair extensions

The advent of hair extensions allows most of us to have the dream hair we were not born with.  Alexis Bellino is wearing hair extensions in both of the above styles verifying that hair extensions are not just for long locks.

Kyle Richards of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills was born with gorgeous hair, but she is known to wear hair extensions on occasion.  The extra hair added with hair extensions gives Kyle Richard's mane a more dramatic look.

It has been said that celebrities such as the women of the Real Housewives spend in access of $10k per year on their hair extensions.  Human hair extensions should never be that costly ~ an average full set of human hair extensions range in price from $450 to $750 for everything; hair cost, application, cutting and styling.  If you are charged more - do your due diligence to seek an expert that is experienced and offers reasonable pricing.

Hair extensions are not just for Real Housewives, but for real women as well.  Go for it - you will not be disappointed, but possibly addicted!

Eyelash Extensions Create Some Drama

Beautifully applied eyelash extensions

Eyelash Extensions are the rage and we have been experts for nearly 10 years.

Eyelash Extensions, not to be confused with false eyelashes found at a drug store can be worn very dramatic to natural. False eyelashes and eyelash extensions are worlds apart.   Your eyes will stand out and attract attention.  Gone are the days of mascara and the best part is you will wake up looking gorgeous effortlessly.

We literally apply an eyelash extension to one of your own lashes.  The eyelash extension is applied to the base of your own lashes not your skin and they grow out and shed as your own eyelashes grow.  We can add lots of drama by adding extra lashes to the outer edge of your eyes or we can create a natural look by adding lashes that are longer and fuller than your own.

Eyelash extensions last up to 5 - 6 weeks and we offer a free touch up in between.  Natural eyelashes shed daily and your eyelash extensions will as well.  We will fill in your eyelash extensions so that they shed on one continuous cycle and this will ensure their longevity.

We use the Xtreme Lash line which is an FDA approved product and we are trained and certified by Xtreme Lash.  Xtreme Lash is a superior product and their training is the best bar none.  It is essential that you seek a well trained and experienced stylist to avoid major blunders and messy lashes!

Improperly applied eyelash extensions clumpy, messy and can cause damage!

Beautifully applied, drama filled Lashes

Tips:

.  No steam 24 hours after eyelash extension application

.  No oils or heavy creams on eyelash extensions

.  Do not rub eyes

.  Use a gentle eyelash brush to separate lashes

.  You really do not need mascara

.  Have your eyelashes checked 2 weeks after application

Enjoy the latest technology to create aesthetically pleasing eyes and love the new you!

African American Hair Facts

Natural hair requires just as much attention as relaxed hair
Gentle hair relaxers and a roller set will keep your hair healthy

African American hair has a lower concentration of sulphur which can cause it to be bit dryer than other hair textures, but hair is hair.  Most damaged hair is due to over processing, overlapping hair relaxers and tension from hair weaves.

The facts:

1) Wash hair often.  A clean scalp is a healthy scalp and hair should be washed as often as necessary to ensure the hair follicle is not clogged.

2) Natural hair is not necessarily healthier than relaxed hair.  Both require extra care to keep hair healthy, such as protein treatments and sulfate free products.

3) Avoid products high in alcohol which leads to drier hair.  Opt for Sulfate free shampoo which do not contain alcohol.

4) Over use of mineral oil on scalp will clog the hair follicle and prohibit hair growth.  Have a gentle scalp massage with a limited amount of Argan oil will stimulate the scalp and leads to healthy hair growth.

Scalp massage with a silk or Argan Oil combined with protein treatments keep hair healthy

5) Mild hair relaxers are a better alternative to super strength hair relaxers.  A successful relaxer is achieved by not overlapping the relaxer and only retouching new hair growth.

6) After relaxing African American hair, it is better to roller set and dry under an overhead dryer than to stretch and pull the hair with a blow dryer  following with a hot iron.

7) It is better to use a gentle hair relaxer than a scorching hot comb.  Hot combs are dangerous and burns the hair cuticle causing immense damage.

8) Fusion hair extensions are a better alternative to a tight hair weave. Fusion hair extensions are applied strand by strand - away from the scalp. This tension free process allows the hair to grow and not snap.  A hair weave can look unnatural and blocks hair growth.

Fusion hair extensions are healthier than a hair weave
hair weaves cause tension which leads to hair loss

9) A professional should apply your hair relaxer.  It is necessary to work with the curl pattern and this is  impossible to see on your own.  A professional will expertly apply your relaxer to avoid overlapping  product which leads to breakage especially around the perimeter of the head.

10) Sensitive scalp? avoid caffeine and brushing prior to relaxing.

11) Brush hair with a natural fiber brush such as boar bristle to prevent overstretching hair especially after a chemical service.

Boar Bristle Brush promotes shine and is gentle on the hair

12) Use a semi-permanent color vs. permanent color on relaxed hair.  Over processed hair leads to major damage.

13) African American hair grows at the same rate as any other hair texture.

All types of hair textures should be handled with care and it is important to seek  a well seasoned stylist that knows how to keep your hair healthy.

Help For Hair Loss In Women

Reasons and Help for Hair Loss in Women
A tied in Hair Loss System - help for hair loss in women
Hair Loss in women is rising and at an epidemic rate. Although hair loss is a complex problem, there are solutions.  If you are struggling with thinning hair, hair loss, alopecia and trichotillomania ~ you are not alone.

Women lose hair for a variety of reasons. One of the main reasons is  stress. At any given time, approximately fifteen percent of hair is in a state of paused growth while it waits for new hair to sprout. Stress and disease can interrupt the growth process, stagnating hair growth. Other major factors include hormonal imbalances, nutritive deficiencies, and medication side effects. Genetics play a big role as well. Female Pattern Baldness is a term for hair loss due to genetics.  Hair loss is often a combination of several factors at once.

Dietary changes can make a big difference in hair growth. A diet rich in whole grains and high in protein is often very helpful, especially when based on organic ingredients. Limiting simple carbohydrates, particularly refined sugars, helps counter insulin resistance.

Taking a multivitamin helps many women receive the vitamins and minerals they need, nutrients that often contribute to healthy hair growth. Fish oil is also important because it helps with inflammation. Although there is no magic pill to revive normal hair growth, the body needs these nutrients to function properly in every regard. Hair growth is no exception.

Most women understand that hair loss is frequently part of menopause because of the big hormonal changes that occur. Even before menopause, however, hair loss can still result from hormonal imbalance. Hormone therapy can be helpful in hair growth as well as other health concerns women may have.

Alternative approaches such as scalp massages and acupuncture may be helpful too. These work to stimulate blood flow. Along the same lines, applying a blend of cinnamon leaf oil and honey to the hair can be very helpful. Doing this often for twenty minutes at a time helps stimulate blood flow in the scalp.
Below is a video which addresses hair loss in women and hair loss systems.

Instead of living with hair loss, be proactive and address your hair's appearance.  A hair loss system that is tied or clipped into your hair is a hair loss solution that is tension free and will not damage your hair.  Wigs are uncomfortable, unnatural and block regrowth.  If there is no hair to attach a hair system, a wig is the only option especially for hair loss due to chemotherapy, but not the perfect solution for thinning hair, alopecia, and trichotillomania (a hair pulling disorder).

Finally, the most important approach is to just relax. Stress affects the entire body and will only make matters worse. Be patient. Understand that hair takes time to grow. Meditation can help the body and the mind during this process. Women who try these solutions in combination with a hair loss system find their stress level is decreased and even hair growth.

Hair Color Trends And What Is Right For You

New Year ~ New You and Hair Color Trends

Your hair color says a lot about you; are you conservative, avant-garde, trendy or spunky? Many get stuck in the hair color rut and the New Year brings a New You.  Lets explore the hair color trends and there differences.

Techniques:

Ombre: The most requested technique where by hair color is darkest at the roots and lightest at the ends.  This hair color trend works with all colors from Chocolate brown roots and  Caramel colored ends to Golden Roots and pale blonde ends.  Ombre is a french term that means hair colors graduates from dark to light.  Ombre hair color is achieved with a Bayalage a hand painting color technique.  Color is painted onto to the hair achieving multi-tonal affects.  With Ombre hair color; the Bayalage (free hand color application) starts at the mid-shaft of the hair with a complimentary mid-tone color and lighter color is painted through the ends.

Ombre works on almost all hair colors:

Bayalage is not just for the Ombre hair color technique, it is a great alternative to foiling. Foiling creates precise highlights where Bayalge creates subtle highlights. Free-handed highlights are more blended and natural.

               Bayalage in process

After Bayalage hair color. Softer/natural highlights.

Foil Highlights have been mainstream for decades and a perfect way to add different shade of hair color in a precise fashion.  Foil highlights create an even highlight and cover more area than Ombre and Balayage hair color.

Born Blonde:  Blonde is the most eye-catching hair color and works well on most complexions, especially to brighten your features and illuminate your face.  Always in style ~ blonde hair color varies from palest blonde, golden blonde and caramel color.  Highlight and lowlight foils create the most natural blonde.

Highlights and lowlights create depth

Brunettes:  Range from medium brown to soft black and most are born somewhere in between.  Shiny brown hair is the optimal color and the use of a semi-permanent hair color is a great way to liven up the color.  Semi-permanent hair color works best on less than 25% gray hair.  Over 50% gray hair requires permanent hair color.  Semi-permanent color gradually fades from the hair and permanent hair color grows out with the hair and regrowth will require a touch-up.  Never be afraid to add multiple tones into Brown hair to create depth and volume.

Fifty Shades of Red:  Red hair offers a variety of shades from copper red (orange/gold base) perfect for a light complexion to deep red hues (blue based) perfect for darker complexions and vibrant red hair considered fashion shades is a trendy take on red hair.

Red hair color fades quickly so purchase a deep conditioner with red pigment for in between color services and wash with luke warm water to avoid fading. A color sealer will help to close the hair cuticle and lock in color.  Shine products keep the hair looking healthy.

Black is Back!  Black hair is perfect for fair skin or dark skin and can be difficult to wear on a medium skin tone.  Think Angelina Jolie or Demi Moore.  Black hair can be harsh and if you are taking the plunge - try on some wigs and see if it is for you.  Black hair does not hide any sins and will show skin flaws.  This exotic hair color requires careful consideration.  Black hair color is hard to lighten and can be quite permanent - once you go black,  it is hard to go back.

Ask for a free consultation with a hair colorist skilled in hair color and hair color trends.  Together you will determine the color, shade and technique that is perfect for you.  Embrace the New Year - New You!

Trichotillomania or Trich an Impulse Control Disorder

Trichotillomania or Trich an Impulse Control disorder where an individual has an overwhelming urge to pull out their hair, they will experience a brief sense of elation while doing so but after affects are debilitating. As a hair loss expert working with hundreds of clients with Trichotillomania, I have found that the lives of sufferer and their families are turned upside down.

Below is a link to view Channel 5 Boston News Segment on Trichotillomania
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dU2pJNdUJXE

There is no known cure for Trich and the medical industry is baffled.  Patients are prescribed anti-anxiety cocktails which render zombies with no hair.  Our studies find early intervention is helpful and it is important for parents to look for the warning signs.

.  Trich affects females 80% more than males
.  Trich can start as young as one year old
.  Watch for constant hair twirling

This is what Trich looks like and you would never know in the fashion this client normally wears her hair. She pulls it all up and leaves a bang section that hides the front.

Inevitably, there will be a time that the sufferer is called out and now they are faced with what to do.

Best Approach

Raise self esteem by adding hair to the area by utilizing a hair loss system.  The system should never be glued onto the hair.  Instead, it is best to have the hair loss system tied into the hair.  Utilizing micro hair extensions around the perimeter of the hair loss is a safe approach.  The hair extensions serve as an anchor to hold the system in place and a pliable string is attached from the hair system onto the hair extensions.  The application is tension free and will not cause further hair loss.

What has been discovered

The hair loss system serves as a barrier and a reminder for the sufferer and they do not touch their hair.  Moreover, while the area is covered, new hair is growing!  The hair loss system is tightened every 6 weeks or so and with each visit the client with Trichotillomania gains confidence as they experience new hair growth.  Many stop pulling and the impulse to pull is unlearned.  This is a gift to the person who once would not leave their house and self esteem was at it lowest.

This is what the hair loss system, combined with hair extensions look like.  Since most people with Trich are young - they appreciate this modern look.

The hair system is for all ages and more mature clients may prefer a shorter style, but any style can be achieved!

Do not fall prey to Hair Clubs that shave and glue hair onto clients or require contracts with a hefty price.  Trichotillomania is more common than imagined.  Never discount psychotherapy, but it is paramount to approach one's look in conjunction with talk therapy.

Always ask for a free consultation, ask questions, receive written instructions and a two week follow up appointment.  Trichotillomania can be successfully  treated and those with it can lead an active and normal life!

Hair Extensions Are Not Just For Long Hair

Misconception; Hair Extensions are just for long hair....

Not true!  As a Hair Extension Expert for nearly 20 years, many of my clients use hair extensions to add volume to their hair style.  Fusion hair extensions made of keratin protein is a wonderful way to bulk up fine hair, especially a short to long bob hairstyle or a mid-length hairstyle.  Fine and thinning hair benefit from micro fusion hair extensions; literally 10 strands can be added to small sections of hair and the illusion of more hair is created.  Don't overlook hair extensions if your hair is not thick enough to pull off a shorter hairstyle

This client uses hair extensions to add one inch of extra hair and more volume.  Hair Extensions also help to change hair texture to appear  healthier.

Yes she is wearing fusion extensions and still relaxes her hair while wearing them.

What type of hair extensions are the safest?

Hair extensions applied strand by strand to your own hair are the safest application.  20 strands of your hair is separated in clean precise sections and a 30 to 40 strands of hair are applied 1/4" away from your scalp.  This creates a tension free section which allows your own hair to grow perfectly, you can brush right through the hair extensions, color, relax, curl/flat iron and style as would your own hair.

Different types of application:

Keratin Protein Fusion:  The most popular application which utilizes a keratin protein adhesive that fuses with the keratin protein in your own hair.  This adhesive is strong, but not strong enough to damage hair.  Fusion hair extensions last up to 5 months and grow out with your own hair.  The keratin protein adhesive is easily removed from the hair with an alcohol based solution which renders the adhesive to powder and combed out of the hair.  Most find their own hair grows in while wearing extensions and some have such tremendous growth that they no longer wear hair extensions.  Hair extensions are a perfect way to grow out hair from a bad hair cut!

Micro Link Hair Extensions:  These are applied in the same strand by strand fashion.  A metal link is threaded into the hair and a hair extension is placed into the micro link hair extension, the metal link is then clamped shut.  The only downside is that Micro Link hair extensions can slip out of the hair and require more maintenance.  Also, if you need an MRI the extensions will need to be removed.

Seamless Tape Hair Extensions;

Perfect for a temporary application.  Two inch wide strips of hair are applied to the hair with a silicone based tape.  This method is not as popular as strand by strand hair extensions, but are a great way to try hair extensions.  Keep in mind - Seamless tape hair extensions are not recommended for fine hair.

If you are ready to take the plunge for a New You - go for hair extensions.  Hair extensions can add just volume or volume and length!  Remember to research your stylist/salon and get a free consultation to ensure they are for you! Visit Noelle Salon to learn more.

Hair Blunders - too much of a good thing!

Most are inclined to stay abreast of the latest hair trends, but when is too much of a good thing enough.  Below are some typical beauty blunders!  Do not fall prey to them and opt for a more subtle take on the trends.

Too Blonde/Too Tanned

When you are blonde you may be inclined to become more blonde, then more blonde.  Blonde hair can be exquisite, but not when your skin is overly tanned and please NO frosted lips.  This bleach blonde hair can be harsh on the complexion and very dated circa Pamela Anderson 1995.

Opt for a more subdued look - blonde hair is beautiful - highlights are refreshing and soft.  A mix of soft highlights and lowlights is a natural look that is up-to-date and sophisticated.

Clipper Cuts for Women

This trend is tres chic, but a completely cropped head of hair can be harsh on the most gorgeous face.  Unless you are embracing your masculine side, it is a good idea to steer clear of this hair trend.

If you are a style diva; and have the guts - go for a partially shaved style.  Shaving one side of the hair and keeping the rest of the hair long and in tact is a more subdued approach to the clipper cut trend. Just keep in mind, growing your hair back can be a real *itch and takes time.  Think long and hard before shaving your head. Be sure to keep a deep side part that can be flipped over to cover the shaved side when you are ready to grow in your hair.

Crimped Hair

Thankfully crimping your hair with a crimping iron is not a permanent state because it can get tired very quickly.  All over crimped hair looks dry and out of date.  Crimped hair was the rage in the 80's, but unless you are very young you will look like you are "stuck" in the 80's.

A better alternative?  Why not go for beachy waves that are soft and current.  Beachy waves are sexy and have that effortless look.  You can achieve beachy waves with a triple barrel curl iron or just by scrunching hair with a cocktail of gel and silicone product to promote shine.

Teased Hair with Lots of HAIRSPRAY

Teased hair or back combed hair is certainly not a new technique to create volume and big hair.  Big hair is definitely back, but all over teased tresses with tacky hair spray will add years to your look.   Your hair will look dull and over done!  Not to mention, teasing hair causes damage and can break your hair right at the hair follicle.  DON'T DO IT.....

Like Big hair?  Then go for a more refined look by simply back combing the crown of your hair to add volume.  Roller set your hair and use silicone shine spray to keep your hair looking healthy.  Tousled ends looks modern and stylish.  A far more refined option for all ages is the below style.

There you have it!  Enjoy the latest hair trends and keep your look stylish and current. Visit me at Noelle Salon and we will collectively define that perfect look just for you!

A Cure for Trichotillomania

Trichotillomania, is an impulse control disorder where people chronically pull out body hair to relieve anxiety and tension. Currently, it is estimated between two and ten million Americans have trichotillomania. Experts worry that's just the tip of the iceberg. Shame and secrecy mean trichotillomania often goes unreported and undiagnosed.

Experts say the sooner it is caught, the more likely it can be treated. Parents need to know the warning signs, which include missing eyelashes, excess hair fiddling, wearing hats and kerchiefs, changes in social behavior and grades, anxiety and depression, and avoiding wet or windy situations that might expose hair loss. Adults who suffer from this condition should find comfort in knowing that help is available and confidence can be restored after undergoing treatment.

Noelle Spinosa, owner at Noelle Salon and Hair Loss Centers offers a healthy remedy for this undiagnosed condition. A hair system is intricately sewn into existing hair to hide hair loss and more importantly, create a barrier to prevent pulling. In a recent interview with Channel 5 News, Spinosa reports hair growth by as much as 6-8 inches after one year.
